Dr. Debra White-Jefferson, RN, MSN - Assistant Professor
Dr. Debra White-Jefferson is an assistant professor in the RN to BSN program at UL Lafayette. She teaches the Capstone Project Course in the online RN-BSN program. Students in this course will learn how to apply evidence-based research in their workplaces.
Debra White is an instructor in the RN to BSN program in the Department of Nursing at UL Lafayette. She has a master's degree in Nursing Education from the University of South Alabama. She is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at Case Western Reserve University. She is also an ULearn Certified Online Teacher. She was a recipient of the Promise of Nursing for Louisiana Regional Faculty Fellowship for 2013 and 2014.
Ms. White has been teaching for 11 years in the classroom and clinical settings with students in Licensed Vocational Nursing, Associate Degree Nursing, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs. Ms. White's clinical work experience includes telemetry, home health, and post-partum nursing care. She has served as a Chief Nursing Officer in the home health area and in a small general hospital. She has authored one article and co-authored two articles.

Capstone Project Course
What do you want your students to learn in these classes?
Students will learn how to apply evidence-based research to write a proposal for a problem identified in the workplace. The proposal for a practice change will be presented to a target audience capable of accepting or rejecting the proposal. The Capstone Project allows students to use skills learned throughout the curriculum and apply them in the workplace to address a problem.
Why did you start teaching?
When I returned to school to get my BSN, I knew then I wanted to teach. I began to concentrate my education in that direction.
What advice would you give to those considering the RN to BSN online program?
Attaining the BSN degree is a huge accomplishment. Fortunately, many nurses can still work full time while in the RN-BSN program. Nurses are also caring for and supporting families, parents and grandparents. Establish a timeline and go for it!
What is the value of a BSN?
The BSN degree opens many doors. Even if you start out because your workplace requires it, that's not all it can do. It is the springboard to launch your career in many directions.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that nurses face today?
Nurses are facing many challenges today. An aging population, changing technology, the nursing shortage and demanding schedules are just a few of those challenges. These on-the-job challenges coupled with personal life can be very stressful. Finding support for nurses should be a mission of the institution to help keep them prepared and ready to adequately confront issues they face on a daily basis.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
I think nurses should commit to subscribing and reading at least one nursing journal monthly to keep abreast of the latest information in the field.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know.
It was in my RN-BSN studies that I discovered my career goal: teaching. I also knew I wanted to work with RN-BSN students in academia. Needless to say, I have my dream job!
