I feel as though my career as a nurse has been one big "highlight." I started at the bottom as a CNA/HHA. I became a travel nurse, which taught me a lot about time management and critical-thinking skills. However, transitioning into education has been my "real" highlight in my career. I am devoted to my students' success and enjoy teaching online.
In which online degree program do you teach?
Which classes do you teach online?
NURS 354, NURS 353
What do you want your students to learn in these classes?
In these courses the students will be taught about leadership, professional nursing, evidence-based practice, safe and high-quality care, and nursing informatics within diverse cultures. I want my students to be able to embrace creativity and share their experience as nurses while developing their writing skills. Students will learn how to apply evidence-based practice to their clinical practice while continuing to practice within the framework of professional nursing practice. Within these courses, there is emphasis on theoretical and ethical/legal foundations of practice, management and communication—all of which students are able to apply to their clinical practice as RN's.
Why did you start teaching?
I started teaching nursing because I fell in love with the way nursing was taught to me. I had remarkable nursing instructors and valued and appreciated the way they instructed as nurse educators. I was able to take new nurses, seasoned nurses and nursing students as a travel nurse on the units. At that time I started to appreciate the impact I had on these nurses and decided to take the nurse educator path. I then enrolled in my MSN and was able to do my schooling from home while raising my twin boys.
What advice would you give to those considering the online RN to BSN program?
These courses are based around professional nurses and their busy lifestyles between family and work. Don't give up. Stay focused and stay motivated. If you are feeling overwhelmed, contact your instructor and set up a phone meeting or a virtual meeting with him/her. The curriculum here at UL is challenging and it takes a lot of time management and commitment. Stay on top of the assignments and deadlines, and keep communication open with your instructors. There are many options and resources here at UL: Take advantage of them.
What is the value of a BSN?
We all know that health care is constantly changing and advancing at high speeds. Receiving a BSN degree is beneficial for the nurse and the patients that are cared for by those with a BSN. Career advancement is also a benefit of completing a BSN degree, as many careers require nurses to have a BSN. By advancing your RN degree with a BSN, you have the ability to bring EBP to life within your field. The BSN exposes and prepares nurses to deeper concepts of nursing while allowing them to enter today's nursing jobs feeling "ready."
What do you think is the biggest challenge that nurses face today?
The biggest challenge nurses face today in my opinion is just juggling life in general. Typically students are timid on returning back to school after nursing school because there are many other adult responsibilities that do not go away when you are in school. Managing a family and work is challenging in itself. Challenges also include long shifts and exhausting days while managing family and other commitments.

- I love to work out. It is my outlet of each day and keeps me energized and healthy.
- My MSN degree was all online, so I understand the fears and anxiety that comes along with it. I am planning to do my Ph.D. all online as well.
