Dr. Melinda Oberleitner is the Dean in the College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions and a professor in the Department of Nursing at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Dr. Oberleitner holds the SLEMCO/BORSF Endowed Professorship in Nursing. She has extensive instructional and administrative experience in nursing education at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Dr. Oberleitner's clinical background is in oncology nursing and she is a recognized as a pioneer in the specialty in Louisiana. She has been licensed as an oncology clinical nurse specialist for almost 30 years. Dr. Oberleitner was one of the first nurses in the world and the first in Louisiana to achieve certification as an oncology certified nurse in 1986. Because of her extensive and distinguished achievements in oncology nursing, Dr. Oberleitner was recognized by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation as the Oncology Certified Nurse of the Year in 1996. In addition, she was awarded the Lifesaver of the Year Award by the Louisiana Division of the American Cancer Society for her work with oncology patients and families in the state.
More recently, Dr. Oberleitner has been selected to serve on several national project teams, research teams, and task forces on behalf of the Oncology Nursing Society. She has served on the editorial review board of the Oncology Nursing Forum since 1997 and as associate editor of the publication. Dr. Oberleitner and a colleague were selected as the initial associate editors of the Leadership and Professional Development feature of the Forum.
Dr. Oberleitner also serves on the editorial board of The Oncology Nurse – APN/PA. She has an extensive publication and national presentation record in the areas of oncology nursing, nursing education, and nursing leadership and management.
